A British Aviation Icon
The Miles M.28 Mercury was developed as a training and communications aircraft during the Second World War. A single-engine wooden monoplane with distinctive twin tail and retractable tailwheel undercarriage, it embodied cutting-edge design for its time.
Initially conceived as a replacement for the Whitney Straight and Miles Monarch, the project was put on hold at the outbreak of war. Revived in 1941 as a private venture by Ray Bournon, the Mercury was ahead of its time featuring retractable landing gear, trailing-edge flaps, and a 500-mile range in the four-seat communications role.
Only six examples were ever built, with the Mercury 6 being the final evolution taking flight for the first time in early 1946. G-AHAA, formerly OY-ALW, returned to the UK after decades in Danish ownership and is now the focus of a dedicated and detailed restoration project.
Current Status A Promising Project
