Description

AT Aviation is delighted to offer G-AMUF, an exceptionally well-presented and highly equipped De Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk Mk21, direct from our Showroom. G-AMUF benefits from a zero-time Vintech Gipsy Major 10-2 engine installed in 2019, now with just 314 hours since zero time. The aircraft is fitted with Funke avionics installed in the front cockpit with remote controls in the rear, allowing operation from either cockpit. The engine can similarly be electrically started from either cockpit. G-AMUF retains its twin landing lights dating from its original Hamble training days and its comfortable touring seats fitted over the standard parachute-type seats. The aircraft has been fitted with 12 Gallon a side fuel tanks, giving it a longer range than most Chipmunks - (Circa 3 hours 20mins endurance in normal operation)

G-AMUF (C1-0832), was ordered new directly from the De Havilland company in July 1952 by Air Service Training Ltd of Hamble as one of a batch of six aircraft. Delivered later in 1952, G-AMUF entered service training commercial airline pilots, principally for BOAC and BEA. It remained at Hamble and in 1960, when the organisation became The College of Air Training, continued training pilots there until 1971. During its long service at Hamble the aircraft received the successive AST and CAT colour schemes and accumulated an exceptional period of continuous operational service.

In 1971 G-AMUF was declared surplus to requirements and was leased for two years to the East Midlands School of Flying at East Midlands Airport, Castle Donington. After which UF subsequently entered private ownership, where the owner had the aircraft repainted at Wycombe Air Park and based it at Denham. In 1976 G-AMUF entered a new period of private ownership, operating initially from Biggin Hill before moving to Redhill around 1977/78. Then in 1983, it was acquired by The Redhill Tailwheel Flying Club Ltd, which was established by two private individuals to operate the aircraft. From 1983 until 2019, they operated G-AMUF extensively throughout Europe and Scandinavia, with the aircraft touring as far afield as Malta and North Africa. In 1993 G-AMUF was stripped to bare metal and the wings were recovered before the aircraft was repainted in the scheme it carries today; the control surfaces have also recently been recovered.

In 2019, after 36 years with the Redhill Tailwheel Flying Club, G-AMUF passed to its current owner, who commissioned the installation of the zero-time Vintech Gipsy Major 10-2. G-AMUF has remained airworthy throughout its life, apart from normal short maintenance periods, and represents a rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally well-equipped and historically significant Chipmunk with an outstanding provenance, genuine long-range touring capability and a low-time engine.
