Description
Zenair CH601 HDS 26,500.00 GBPWilco Aviation is delighted to present this Zenair CH601 HDS, registration G-BVAC.
Currently located at our facility at Henstridge Airfield in the South West of England, viewings are available by appointment.
Originally constructed by a former Supermarine engineer, this aircraft known affectionately as Alpha Charlie has been built to an exceptional standard, with meticulous attention to detail throughout. Additional wing tanks increase fuel capacity by 75 litres, supplementing the 60-litre main tank and providing an outstanding endurance of over eight and a half hours, plus at least one hour of reserve. This impressive range is due to the low fuel consumption of the Rotax 912 UL engine, which burns just 14 litres per hour.
The original builder frequently flew the aircraft to and from Sweden, so a constant-speed propeller was installed boosting cruise performance to approximately 105 knots and extending endurance to up to 9.5 hours. Additionally, the constant-speed propeller significantly enhances short-field performance, making G-BVAC particularly well-suited to operations from farm strips and other unprepared or confined airfields.
The Zodiac series comprises a family of Canadian-designed, all-metal, two-seat aircraft with fixed landing gear. First flown in 1984, these aircraft have been produced as kits and fully assembled models by Zenair in Canada and by Zenith Aircraft Company in the United States.
The Zodiac was originally developed in the early 1970s by engineer Chris Heintz of Avions Pierre Robin. The Zenair CH 200 kit plane was designed for homebuilding, allowing aviation enthusiasts to assemble the aircraft themselves. Various iterations have since been manufactured across Canada, Europe, the US, and South America, both as kits and ready-to-fly factory-built aircraft.
The original Zodiac model was engineered for a load factor of 6g at a maximum gross weight of 1,200 pounds, 6.9g at 1,050 pounds, and 8.3g at 875 pounds. The prototype had an empty weight of just 590 pounds. Heintz also contributed significantly to the development of light-sport aircraft regulations in both Canada and the United States.
Zenith Aircraft Company continues to produce kits and quick-build options for the Zodiac range, with over 1,000 examples flying worldwide.
This particular aircraft, the SUPER ZODIAC, is based on the ZODIAC CH601 HD but features shortened, tapered speed wings to improve cruise performance. The wingspan is reduced to 23 feet, with a wing area of 98 square feet. The airfoil tapers to a 34-inch chord at the tips and features full-length ailerons for responsive handling. The fuselage and tail section remain identical to the CH601 HD, and the outboard wing panels are even interchangeable between the two models.
G-BVAC has recently benefited from extensive maintenance, bringing it up to a very high standard. All rubber hoses fuel, oil, and coolant have been replaced in accordance with the Rotax Line Maintenance Manual. The carburettors have been overhauled, and a full 200-hour engine service has been completed. Cylinder compressions are excellent, reading 80, 80, 79, and 80 over 80psi. The nose oleo bungee as well as all three tyres and tubes have also been replaced.
All maintenance has been meticulously documented on LAA worksheets and signed off by an approved LAA engineer. Compliance with the recent Zenair MTD-01-2025 directive has also been confirmed.
