The Grumman AA5A has so many trump cards to play. It s easy to skip by them, but once you ve flown it for a bit then it becomes compelling. The controls are on pushrods, and are silky smooth with a sporty feel in the air. This is accentuated by being able to fly with the canopy cracked open. The AA5 is the fastest certified aeroplane using the Lycoming O-320, and it fills a the role of a low cost tourer very nicely. The two back seats fold into a large flat load space, there is lots of head and shoulder room and it would excel as a great way for 2 people and luggage to nip about at speeds of around 115 knots in the cruise. Each wing holds 72 Litres useable so you have 4 hours plus reserves there.

G-PAWS being a 1979 aircraft, is from the last model year of the AA-5A Cheetah, which was introduced as a 1976 model in late 1975. It offers a six-knot speed increase over the previous Traveler, maintaining the same 150 hp Lycoming O-320-E2G engine. To help distinguish it from the earlier AA-5, Grumman s marketing team created a unique "leaping cheetah" emblem. The engine cowling and baffling were updated to improve cooling efficiency, and the exhaust system was redesigned. Enhancements were made to the main landing gear fairings, the ventral fin was removed, and the horizontal tail was enlarged to allow for a broader center of gravity range.
